All Smoke and No Fire
Project Liaison
May/June 2008
As part of Free Range 2008, Tether produced a five-day collaborative show entitled All Smoke and No Fire.
Focusing on the process of artistic compromise and reflecting upon the reality of post-graduate life, All Smoke and No Fire presented artworks that reacted to the challenge of creating work as a collective, and attempted to live up to the cavernous grandeur of the Old Truman Brewery.

The pieces that made up All Smoke and No Fire distinguish the show from all other Free Range exhibitions thus far- representing the combined practices of roughly a dozen fine artists, free from individual artistic ownership from any of the group’s constituent members. The curation, management and organisation of the project lay completely with Tether's members; ranging from sponsorship and advertising, down to the construction of the works themselves.
Hugh Dichmont's role in All Smoke and No Fire as Project Liaison involved general logistical organisation of the show's elements, negotiation with the Freerange organisers and the show's sponsors and general project management- which was the joint responsibility of many of Tether's contributing members.

Tether Festival
Co-director with Samuel Mercer
November 2007
Spanning three weeks, Tether Festival consisted of events, exhibitions, performances and screenings dedicated to new, ambitious and innovative artworks being produced in the UK. Featuring works by some of the East Midlands most exciting, emerging creative talent, the festival represented the first major project by Nottingham artist group Tether.

As festival directors, Hugh Dichmont and Samuel Mercer were responsible for all organisational aspects of the three weeks; from locating the majority of festival venues, to party organisation, flyer and brochure design, managing the budget, advertising, sponsorhip and funding applications, liaising with the artists, curators, volunteers and the press, and many other associated tasks.

Burning Holes
with Chie Hosaka
April 2007
An exhibition of detailed miniature artworks from artists Hugh Dichmont, Benjamin Hargrave, Chie Hosaka, Lauren O'Grady, Harriet Startin, Laura Taylor, Elizabeth Teasdale and Daniel Warren.
Each piece was either placed directly on to the gallery floor, or upon varying piles of books, inviting the audience to investigate the works with magnifying glasses on bended knee. Working with the themes of fantasy, story, discovery and wonder, the exhibition aimed to distort the conventions and character of the art gallery environment, and the nature of adult learning.
